Manchester United conceded their first home loss on the opening day of the Premier League season since 1972, as Swansea ran away with a 2-1 win on Saturday.
Gylfi Sigurdsson’s match-winner was enough to hand the Welsh club their first ever win at Old Trafford on Louis van Gaal’s league debut as Man United boss.
The hosts fell behind to Ki Sung-yueng’s accurate shot from 20-yards before Wayne Rooney- in his first league match as captain- leveled with a close-range overhead kick from a corner.
Despite enjoying more possession in the succeeding period, United failed to clear a Jefferson Montero’s cross, allowing Sigurdsson, in his second game since returning from Tottenham Hotspur, to tap in.
Summer signing Bafetimbi Gomis almost compounded the ‘Red Devils’s’ woes, but couldn’t control the ball after a Sigurdsson’s pass.
Two United young academy products, Tyler Blackett and Jesse Lingard, earned their league debuts, after the Dutch boss admitted prior to the early afternoon kick-off that the recent spate of injuries to his first team members had left him without a choice.
In the absence of the injured Luke Shaw, midfielder Andre Herrera was the only new face from David Moyes’ seventh-placed team last season.
Not many would have predicted the outcome of the match right, and with United, setting up in Van Gaal’s favoured 3-4-1-2 formation, either of Ashley Young- who was later taken off injured- and Lingard moved forward well to put Swansea under pressure.
But the Mancunians failed to pose any significant problem to Lukas Fabianski, the ex-Arsenal goalkeeper standing in goal for his new Welsh club.
And when the visitors fought back, it took them just two minutes shy of half an hour to get ahead.
An unchecked Ki reacted quick to meet Nathan Dyer’s pass across the edge of the box and slot past David de Gea into the bottom corner.
It was an unexpected reality but Van Gaal, as usual was no one to easily spill emotions, and only switch formation in the second period following the introduction of Luis Nani.
The change brought United back to life and the equaliser came on 53th minute, when a Phil Jones’ flick at the near post reached the England international, who volleyed into the net from close range.
The newly appointed captain then fired a curling free-kick from 25 yards against the outside of the post.
And while it looked United were going to capitalise on a shift in momentum and get in the ascendancy, their passes began losing that touch of urgency, which Gary Monk’s men discovered and reclaimed the lead on 72 minutes.
Young failed to deal with substitute Jefferson Montero’s cross at the far post and Wayne Routledge’s miss-cued volley found Sigurdsson to sink the bouncing ball behind De Gea.
United tried to salvage the situation but some spirited defending from the Swans saw them hang on to victory in front of 75,339 crowd gathered to witness the opening game of the 2014/15 season.
